GM is developing an automotive digital assistant similar to ChatGPT

The same machine learning algorithms that enable ChatGPT are also being used by General Motors to create an in-car digital assistant. Semafor first the news of the development earlier this week, and GM later confirmed it to Reuters. "ChatGPT is going to be in everything," GM Vice President Scott Miller told the publication.

The carmaker plans to use the digital assistant, among other things, to aid drivers in circumstances when they may have previously consulted their vehicle's owner's handbook. For instance, if your automobile has a flat tyre, the assistance might demonstrate how to change the tyre. Moreover, it could have scheduling and integration capabilities with other devices, such as garage door openers.

Customers can anticipate that their future vehicles will be far more competent and innovative overall when it comes to developing technology, a GM spokeswoman told Reuters. "This transition is not just about one specific feature like the advancement of voice commands," the spokesperson said.

The virtual assistant will function differently from current chatbots like Bing Chat, claims Semafor. According to reports, GM is attempting to build a "car-specific layer" on top of the substantial language models that underpin ChatGPT. The project is a component of a larger partnership between the manufacturer and Microsoft. The two teamed together in 2019 to develop autonomous vehicles. As Microsoft is the only cloud service provider for OpenAI, Azure is almost probably where GM's in-car assistant will run. Neither GM nor Semafor disclosed a probable release date or if the software has a name yet.
