LG made a 49-inch HDR monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate

LG is adding a new model to its UltraGear series of gaming monitors. No, the company's most recent product is not a new OLED panel, before you ask. Yet, it's intriguing for a number of reasons. The LG 49GR85DC-B is marketed as a quick ultrawide with industry-leading HDR capabilities.

The display has an aggressive 1000R curve, a 49-inch VA screen with a 32:9 aspect ratio, 5,120 by 1,440 resolution, and 98.5 percent DCI-P3 coverage. Moreover, it has a 240Hz refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium, and a stated 1ms pixel response time. To top it all off, LG claims the 49GR85DC-B is DisplayHDR 1000 certified, indicating the panel has some local dimming and can peak at an eye-searing 1000 nits of brightness.

At first look, the 49GR85DC-B appears to have a spec list that should be a home run for fans of ultrawide gaming, but there are a few factors to keep in mind that might not make it as desirable as it initially appears. There is the cost first. The 49GR85DC-B from LG is priced at $1,300. That's a lot for an LCD in 2023. Also, from my experience, VA panels are never as quick as their makers claim, so don't be shocked if LG's newest doesn't match the 1ms reaction time it claims. It's also important to note that few video games support 32:9 aspect ratios.

From today, the 49GR85DC-B is up for presale on the LG website. The business will give you a free UltraGear Gaming Pad if you choose to act quickly on this one. That is a $200 mouse mat with RGB lights that also functions as a USB hub.
