Apple is under fire for allegedly invoking privacy to excuse its inactivity on child abuse material on iCloud

 


A proposed class action complaint alleges that Apple is using privacy arguments to avoid its responsibilities to prohibit the storage of child sexual abuse data on iCloud and to address suspected grooming activities via iMessage.

This development comes after a UK organization accused Apple of drastically underreporting cases of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to AppleInsider, the latest lawsuit accuses the business of "privacy-washing" in order to reduce its duties.

A recent submission to the US District Court for the Northern District of California has been filed on behalf of an unidentified 9-year-old plaintiff. The petition, which only mentions Jane Doe, alleges that she was coerced into making and downloading child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on her iPad.

According to the complaint, when 9-year-old Jane Doe received an iPad for Christmas, she had no idea that it would be used by offenders to push her into generating and uploading child sexual


The legal complaint claims that Apple manipulates the concept of 'privacy' to suit its own interests, stating, "At times, it prominently displays 'privacy' on urban billboards and polished advertisements, while at other moments, it employs privacy as a rationale to ignore the blatant violations of Doe and other children's privacy due to the widespread presence of CSAM on Apple's iCloud."
