A brand-new Mac? Here's how to configure and personalise Apple MacOS

Before you can begin using your new Mac computer effectively, you must configure it with the appropriate settings. The setup procedure is simple, but if you want to go over every setting you need to enable, disable, or edit, it may take some time.

Whether you have a MacBook laptop or Mac desktop, setting up a Mac is the same process. For the purposes of this procedure, we'll suppose that you want to completely set up a fresh Mac.

Set Location and Accessibility Settings

The first thing to do after turning on the computer is to choose your nation or region. If you want to enable specific accessibility features to help with vision, hearing, and other aspects, you will be prompted. Choose one if you must. If not, select Not Now to skip this or schedule it for a later time.

Connect to Wi-Fi

The next step is to join a wireless network using your PC. Enter the password for the Wi-Fi network you want to use, then click Proceed. The privacy of your data is described on the next screen. To read more about this subject, click the Learn More option; alternatively, click Continue.

Transfer Data With Migration Assistant

The Migration Assistant, which lets you transfer data from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, or a Windows Computer, is then presented to you as an option. Choose the correct option and finish the migration procedure if you have content you want to move. If you decide against doing so right away, you can still transfer data using Migration Assistant after the machine has been configured.

Set Up Apple ID and Login

Next, enter your Apple ID and password to log in. The account you use to log into Apple services is this one. You will be asked to input a verification number that will be sent to your iPhone or iPad if you previously configured Apple ID two-factor authentication (2FA). Accept the iCloud terms and conditions by clicking Proceed.

Verify your entire name there and create an account name to use when logging into your Mac at the Computer Account page. Enter a password and, if desired, a clue. To be able to regain access to your account in the event that you forget your password, check the box next to Allow my Apple ID to reset this password. If you wish to replace your account name with a memoji, emoji, monogram, or photo, click the picture next to it. To complete the account setup, click Proceed.

An explanation of the Find My app's feature, which may be used to help you find your Mac if it ever goes missing, is provided on the following screen.

Customize Specific Settings

Review and modify several crucial settings from the Make This Your New Mac screen. To accept the default values for all the settings, click Proceed. To adjust the location services, analytics, and Siri settings, select Customize Settings at the bottom.

You can enable or disable Location Services for location-based applications like Apple Maps and Weather. By selecting the closest city from the drop-down menu or clicking a place on the map, you can then set your time zone.

Make a decision regarding analytics sharing with Apple next. To find out more about how this data is gathered and used, see the About Analytics and Privacy tab. Consider using Screen Time to limit when specific programmes and websites can be viewed on this Computer. If not, select Set Up Later.

If you want to utilise Siri on your Mac, choose the checkbox next to Activate Siri. If you decide to enable Siri, you will next navigate through a number of windows where you must speak a set of commands for Siri to recognise your voice.

Check Share Audio Recordings if you're okay with Apple listening to your recordings to help enhance Siri. By selecting the About Improving Siri and Dictation & Privacy option, you may find out more information about this. Check Not Now if you don't want to share this information.

The next question is whether you want to use FileVault to encrypt your Mac's disc. Check the Switch on FileVault disc encryption box to protect your disc and data. Moreover, be sure to select Allow my iCloud account to unlock my drive in the event that I forget my Mac password.

Then, if Touch ID is available on your Mac, a setup prompt will appear. Once you've tapped Continue, keep lifting and lowering your finger from the power button until it registers. Click Proceed when Touch ID is ready to use.

The theme for your desktop can then be selected by selecting one of three options: light mode, dark mode, or Auto, which will alter the theme according to the time of day. This option can always be modified in the Display settings after initial setup.

Update Your Mac

You'll be seated at your desktop once the setup is finished. Making sure your Mac is running the most recent version of macOS is the final task on the list.

Choose About this Mac > Software Update, then pick Upgrade Now for a Mac running macOS Monterey or an earlier version. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update on your Mac if it runs macOS Ventura or a later version. Enter your Mac password and permit the update to install if one is available. Your Mac will then restart, allowing you to log back in and start using your new computer.
