To increase its user base, Tumblr is creating a feed that is inspired by TikTok

The newest platform to follow TikTok's lead may be Tumblr. According to a message posted on the Tumblr Staff blog, the firm is preparing a significant redesign of its platform that will include algorithmic recommendations to users' feeds.

The email is unusually open about the causes of the impending adjustments and what it sees as Tumblr's present flaws. The company claims that Tumblr's difficulty in use is the root of the issue. Being a 15-year-old brand is challenging since it is burdened by people's preconceived notions of Tumblr.

Tumblr doesn't give specifics about upcoming features, but it does give some pretty sizable hints. The business describes its present "following" feed as "outdated" and claims that one of its main objectives will be to "deliver great content each and every time the app is opened."

The platform, which is owned by Automattic, claims that it is attempting to "improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds" and "make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are." The business adds that enhancing creator-friendly features, such as the functionality of comments and reblogs, will be essential to luring new users.
The company claims that being a beginner creator on Tumblr might be frightening because there is a significant probability that you will leave or be disappointed after publishing your work and getting no comments or engagement. "The outdated decision to only display content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed ("Following"), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of assisting new creators, is the cause of the lack of feedback," the author writes.

Together, the changes Tumblr is announcing resemble TikTok (or perhaps Instagram) quite a bit: algorithmic suggestions in users' main feeds, creator-friendly features that promote sharing, and more streamlined commenting and conversation tools. That all may appear to be a rather simple strategy in 2023, when users will already be coming to anticipate these capabilities from social platforms. However, given that Tumblr's primary interface hasn't altered all that much in its fifteen years of existence, the new direction might significantly alter the platform's dynamics.
